I am Bubble Tea and welcome to my column.
Today, our subject is about Egg Coffee.
The first one was made by Mr.Hòa in 1946, the French colonial period. He was bartender of the most famous five-star hotel, Metropole Hotel and made thousands of capuchino for upper strata. Inspiried by that coffee, he created a new tiptop coffee that could popularise to folk so it must be cheap, then the idea about egg replaces dear effervescent milk and condensed milk came out.
The way to make it showed the maker’s enthusiasm. At first, he seperated the yolk and glair then creamed one by one with honey and sugar. The coffee was put in the bottle of cup then was cream part. The egg coffee was served with a small cup inside a boild water bowl to keep it hot for a time. It was affected because he had to whisk by hand ‘till it is completed done, just one small mistake made the cream separated or fishy.
Nowadays, the machines make it in easier way but the perfect ratio of ingredients makes the name of Mr.Hòa. You could try the original and perfect egg coffee ( about 20k) in Café Giảng ( 36 Nguyen Huu Huan ) or Café Đinh ( 13 Dinh Tien Hoang ), founded by Mr.Hòa and his sister. You also can mix with condensed milk, cacao or matcha powder,… in personal like.
Please, feed back after trying it or if you have any question, comment down here or see Rosie in reception desk of Chien Hostel.
Loved, Bubble Tea.
You probably heard about those night markets in the Old Quarter. I know. If you’re not ready to pay a tourist price for a low standard products then you’re in the right place for the best 5 local markets in Hanoi
( Fun fact : the best areas in Hanoi to explore is always university areas. They’re smart and always on a budget. So the area provides good stuffs and cheap price. Welcome to the real Hanoi )
So what do they provide there?
They provide such a wide variety of products like street food, clothing, shoes and etc to experience any day of the week. Also this would be a good opportunity to engage with a local way of life here since you will need to practice your bargain skills and join the vibes of the city
1. LINH NAM – HOANG MAI MARKET
It opens daily. It’s located in the south of Hanoi, you can easily get a grab to the market or rent a motorbike to drive there
They sell raw foods and vegetables during daytime. You will experience a fresh look at combination of nature and civilization way of The East. This has been a good old tradiontional way of ours. Fun and savage.
They sell a vast amount of clothing, footwear and household goods at night time.
The customers are likely to be a university student or working class people so the price range is from 100 000VND to 200 000VND or even lower. You will see a big promotion on a daily basis there. The product comes from China mostly but if you’re picky, you can find good stuffs or a good second hand product
This market gives you the opportunity to be a business man as any other market in Viet Nam. They tend to give a higher price since they expect the customer would lower their price. Wouldn’t that be fun to find out how good your bargain skills are?

Cau Giay District contain a huge amount of university. That gives it the most competitive environment in term of a bargain.

This is one of the most famous and age-old night market in Hanoi, which is specialized for clothing, silk, shoe and fashion product. Also this is where you fall in love with street food of Hanoi. This is where you get your belly a good treat. Spend 5$ there and you will not be able to walk straight again. You can not or can bargain here sometimes. People are friendly but take the signal and walk away if you don’t feel welcome. There are plenty of choices here. But when it comes to street food, party on guys
3. PHUNG KHOANG NIGHT MARKET
Comparing with Nha Xanh Market then Phung Khoang is a bit smaller and the product isn’t as various as you will see you Nha Xanh Market. But people are really cool and easygoing that they may even ask for a selfie. Don’t be shy and invite them to have a “bia hoi” .
Anyways, what they provide there is quite like Nha Xanh Market.
They’re very busy on the weekend too. So if you’re tired of Beer Corner in the O.Q then I suggest this charming style of party.
4. LONG BIEN NIGHT MARKET
This is something different.
This market is specialized for providing fruit and food. This is where all the trade is happening. All other market in Hanoi get their supply from here. Starting at 11PM to the next early morning.
